Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme expressed in the thyroid. TPO oxidizes the iodine ion to form an iodine atom, which binds to the thyroglobulin's tyrosine residues to produce thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The expression of TPO gene is regulated by thyroid stimulating hormone. In the normal thyroid, TPO shows diffuse in all follicular cells with granular cytoplasmic staining. The expression level of TPO in thyroid cancer is lower than that of normal thyroid and benign thyroid tumors.
