Smoothelin is a new cytoskeletal smooth muscle-specific protein that is expressed almost exclusively in terminally differentiated (contracted) smooth muscle cells. In contrast to other smooth muscle protein markers such as calponin, desmin, α-SMA, smooth muscle myosin, and h-calmodulin-binding protein, smoothelin is rarely expressed in proliferating (lack of differentiation) smooth muscle cells. Somatostatin is a peptide hormone of pancreatic islet D cells. It is mainly used for the functional classification of pancreatic islet cells and research on endocrine cells and tumors in the digestive tract mucosa.
