Synaptophysin is an integrated membrane protein with a molecular weight of 38KD. It is found in presynaptic vesicles of neurons in the brain, spinal cord, retina and similar vesicles that connect adrenal medulla cells and neuromuscular muscles. Synaptophysin may be involved in synaptic vesicles formation and exocytosis.It mainly used for diagnosis and differential diagnosis of pheochromocytoma, ganglion cell neuroma, paraganglioma and neuroendocrine system tumors.
