Alpha-1-antitrypsin is synthesized in the liver and is present in serum and tissue fluid as a protease inhibitor, especially as an elastase inhibitor. Its main function is to neutralize the release of elastase by neutrophils in the inflammatory response. The deficiency of Alpha-1-antitrypsin may lead to lung failure to inhibit tissue destruction induced by elastase. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency is associated with acinar emphysema and liver disease. In the liver, deficiency of c-1-antitrypsin may cause neonatal hepatitis or cirrhosis of the liver in some individuals during adolescence or adulthood.
