CD31 antigen (pecam-1) is a single-stranded transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 130 to 140kD.The CD31 molecule is expressed at junctions on the surface of platelets, monocytes, granulocytes, B cells, and endothelial cells. The CD31 molecule has an extracellular domain containing six Ig like homologous C2 subunits, which are typical cell-cell adhesion molecules. This domain mediates the adhesion between endothelial cells and cells and plays a role in maintaining the relationship between endothelial cells and the stability of monolayer endothelial cells. The CD31 molecule also has a cytoplasmic domain that is activated by the cell and becomes a potential phosphorylation site. The characteristics of CD31 antigen suggest that it is involved in the interaction between angiogenesis, thrombosis and wound healing, which is the basis of tumor growth and metastasis.
