Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is a glycoprotein synthesized by embryonic yolk sac endoderm cells, fetal liver cells, and intestinal cells. This antibody can label germ cell tumors such as yolk sac tumors and about 25%-50% of hepatocellular carcinoma.
1. Hepatocellular carcinoma. AFP has high specificity and low sensitivity, but AFP can help diagnosis in poorly differentiated tumors, because AFP is often positive at this time, but lacks the tubular structure shown by p-CEA and CD10.
2. Testicular germ cell tumors and ovarian germ cell tumors.
