HCG, also known as human chorionic gonadotropin, is a glycoprotein secreted by placental trophoblastic cells and is highly expressed in the chorionic trophoblasts during pregnancy. It is primarily used in the diagnosis of choriocarcinoma and malignant hydatidiform mole. HCG is also expressed in germ cell tumors such as embryonal carcinoma and seminoma. In addition, HCG expression has been observed in ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and malignant melanoma.
