The CD138 molecule is a transmembrane heparin sulfate glycoprotein that is expressed in normal lymphocytes at different differentiation stages, such as prob cells, immature B cells, and Ig secreting plasma cells, as well as in laminated and monolayer epithelium. It has been reported that the loss of CD138 expression in atypical cells is one of the early manifestations of cervical cancer. In contrast, the expression of CD138 antigen is closely related to the maintenance of epithelial morphological differentiation. The main role of CD138 as an immunohistochemical marker is to quantify plasma cells.
