E-cadherin is a Ca2+ dependent cell adhesion molecule. It plays an important role in the growth and development of epithelial cells and intercellular adhesion. Most structural abnormalities and loss of adhesion are considered important steps in the development of local invasion. E-cadherin may play a role in tumor progression, especially as an inhibitor of invasion. For instance, in prostate cancer, e-cadherin expression is reduced or not expressed, whereas in normal prostates it is strongly expressed. It has also been reported that in primary breast tumors, the expression of E-Cadherin and α、β、γ connexins was reduced or absent. These four proteins associated with metastatic development. The immunohistochemistry of E-Cadherin protein is mainly utilized in breast lobular and ductal carcinomas where the expression is significantly different.
