Caldesmon is a binding protein of smooth muscle actin and calmodulin, located in the fine muscle filament, which regulates the interaction between actin and myosin proteins, and is a marker of smooth muscle cells. In clinical diagnosis, Caldesmon can be used to identify fibroblastoma from true leiomyoma. For example, it is used in combination with CD10 to differentiate uterine smooth muscle tumor from endometrial stromal sarcoma.
