Calcitonin/CT

Calcitonin (CT) is a 32 amino acid peptide synthesized from parietal thyroid follicular cells. It inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption through receptors, reduces calcium uptake in the kidney, and reduces calcium uptake in the intestine. Therefore, the effect of Calcitonin is to cause a decrease in serum calcium, which is the opposite of the effect of parathyroid hormone.Calcitonin gene transcription also encodes Calcitonin gene-related titanium (CGRP), which is considered an effective vasodilator. In parietal thyroid cells, 95% of CT/CGRP is processed and translated to produce CT, but in nerve cells, 99% of CT/CGRP RNA is translated to CGRP.Endocrine neoplasms, medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), sporadic (75% of cases), and hereditary (25% of cases) occur in thyroid C cells.
