Osteopontin (OPN) is a phosphated glycoprotein associated with malignant transformations. The human OPN gene is a single encoded gene located at the 13 site of chromosome 4q. OPN can be secreted by a variety of cells, including macrophages, activated T cells, endothelial cells, osteoblasts, osteoclastcells vascular smooth muscle cells, and tumor cells. This protein is expressed in small amounts in some normal tissues, but in many tumor tissues the amount of expression increases, and numerous studies have shown that tumor metastasis is often accompanied by increased expression of OPN.
